Original black-and-white AP Wirephoto, approximately 187 × 253 mm (7.4 × 10.0 in.), showing rock-music impresario Bill Graham outside the Fillmore East in New York. The image combines a close portrait of Graham speaking into a microphone with a second view of the theater façade and its marquee, which advertises ‘Fillmore East’ and a program of performers. The print has marginal wear, light creasing, surface handling, and the expected tonal variation of a working wire photograph.

The printed verso caption identifies the scene as New York, April 30, and describes Graham discussing the rock-music business, noting that he was leaving the music-hall business in New York and San Francisco and speaking about performers and the future of the field. The caption ends with an AP Wirephoto credit and the reference ‘(See AP AAA wire story)’ followed by the transmission code SH60435DNS and the year 1971. The verso also bears a reference-library stamp and editorial marks.

The Fillmore East, opened by Graham in 1968, became one of the defining concert venues of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its East Village marquee and Graham’s role as promoter make the photograph a compact record of the venue’s closing-era cultural importance and of the business infrastructure behind American rock performance.

As an artifact, the print preserves both the image and the newspaper system that distributed it: AP caption, transmission code, editorial handling, and a split visual design that links promoter and venue. It is an especially useful document of Graham’s public role at the end of the Fillmore East period.
